Holy Spirit and the Working of Miracles

Dr. Brenda Myree • Holy Spirit
Have you ever wondered why more Christians are not functioning in signs, wonders and miracles? I have been asked this on many occasions. After all, didn't Jesus say that these signs and even greater signs we shall do because He went unto the Father? Well, are we cooperating with the Holy Spirit and allowing Him to work through us? Are our motives pure or are we seeking vain glory? Where is our faith? I pray this article will be a blessing to you and answer some of your questions. God bless.

WHAT YOU MUST DO TO COOPERATE WITH THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

IN THE WORKING OF MIRACLES

Psalm 91:1 King James Version (KJV)

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. (Emphasis mine).

While preparing to write this article, it appeared that this is a culmination of several teachings I have done in the past. We need all five facets of ministry gifts (Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor and Teacher) instructing us at every stage of our Christian growth to bring us to the place where the Holy Spirit is able to work through us. I need to know and understand my heavenly identity, the authority I have in Christ, the renewing of my mind, how to live by faith, and what the anointing is and the purpose of the anointing.

While praying about this article, I heard two words in my spirit, dwell and abide, which tells me that it is all about relationship. According to Noah Webster's 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language (Webster's), dwell means:

"To abide as a permanent resident, or to inhabit for a time; to live in a place; to have a habitation for some time or permanence."

Strong-Lite H3427 to dwell, remain, sit, abide; to have one's abode; to be inhabited; to marry.

According to Webster's, abide means:

"To continue permanently or in the same state; to be firm and immovable."

abide. 2014. In Noah Webster's 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language.

Strong's-Lite H3885 Abide is to lodge, pass the night, remain, to cause to rest or lodge. G3306 to remain, to sojourn, tarry, not to depart, to continue to be present, to be held, kept continually, to endure, to remain as one.

In Luke 1:35, Mary is addressed by the angel Gabriel, who told her she was to conceive a child. Not knowing how this would happen, he told her that the Holy Ghost would overshadow her.

Luke 1:35 (KJV)

35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. (Emphasis mine).

So, the first thing I need to do to cooperate with the power of the Holy Spirit in the working of miracles is to have a personal relationship with Him or abide or remain as one with Him. I love Him and am in love with Him. He must dwell, be a permanent resident in me. When I abide in Him and He dwells in me, just as He overshadowed Mary, I become impregnated with spiritual things. I love what Katherine Kuhlman once said about the Holy Spirit when she asked a congregation to not grieve the Holy Spirit because He's all I've got.

In John 15, Jesus put it this way:

John 15:4-5, 7 (KJV)

4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

I can do nothing apart from Christ (the anointed one and His anointing). If I am to bear fruit I must abide in Him and His Word must abide in me, we must remain as one. If His Word abides in me I shall ask and it shall be done to the glory of the Father.

Acts 17:28 (KJV)

For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

In Him alone, I live, I move and have my being. Without Him I am nothing. I have been crucified with Christ, yet I live, yet not I but Christ is living His life through me. I am in Him and He is in me just as He is in the Father and the Father is in Him. We are one so He works through me. I must do what Jesus did while He prayed to the Father in Matthew 26:39 (KJV) where He said, "Nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt." Nevertheless, never less than His will. I must submit my will to His will. I must be surrendered. Jesus said in Matthew 16:24, "If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me."

1 Kings 20:1-4 (KJV)

20 And Benhadad the king of Syria gathered all his host together: and there were thirty and two kings with him, and horses, and chariots; and he went up and besieged Samaria, and warred against it.

2 And he sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel into the city, and said unto him, Thus saith Benhadad,

3 Thy silver and thy gold is mine; thy wives also and thy children, even the goodliest, are mine.

4 And the king of Israel answered and said, My lord, O king, according to thy saying, I am thine, and all that I have.

Just as Ahab said to Benhadad, king of Syria, I am thine, and all that I have. I must surrender everything to the Holy Spirit. Even though Ahab's surrender was a tactic and false surrender, I, just as Jesus bowed to the will of the Father, must surrender my will, all that I am and all that I have. I must yield to the Holy Spirit and resign myself into His power if He is to fully live His life through me. I must yield myself to the Holy Spirit so through Him I may be conformed into the image of Jesus (the Word) by the renewing of my mind. I must be assimilated into Him.  Me,  being the lesser, taking on the nature of the greater, in thought, word, and deed.

Romans 12:2 (KJV)

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

A simple definition of the word "surrender" is:

The act of yielding or resigning one's person or the possession of something, into the power of another.

Romans 8:29-30 (KJV)

29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. (Emphasis mine).

30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

I have been bought with a price and am not my own. I belong to Jesus. As one surrendered to the one to whom I belong, I present myself to Him, a living sacrifice, His holy temple.

Romans 12:1 (KJV)

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. (Or, which is my reasonable worship).

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (KJV)

19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

Holy Spirit always points to Jesus. I am to be mindful to give glory to Jesus for all He does through me. I am to fully preach the Gospel of Christ.

Romans 15:19 (KJV)

Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ. (Emphasis mine).

I am to live in the anointing of the Holy Ghost, walking in the Spirit and not as a carnal Christian. I will walk by faith and not by sight. There is so very much I can do to cooperate with the Holy Spirit. I am to stir up the gift of the Holy Ghost in me, I am to build myself up in my most holy faith by praying in tongues. I must have a prayer life communicating continuously with Him. I am to believe on him whom He hath sent. I must be a doer of the Word and speak the Word only. In other words, I must do all that Jesus did, all that is written in His Word and follow the instructions of the Spirit of Truth (the Holy Spirit). Allowing the Holy Spirit to conform me into the image of the Word having the mind of Christ, in thought, word and deed.

John 6:29 (KJV)

Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

Galatians 5:25 (KJV)

If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

James 1:22 (KJV)

22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

John 14:12 (KJV)

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

1 Corinthians 2:16 (KJV)

For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? but we have the mind of Christ.

2 Timothy 1:6 (KJV)

Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

Jude 1:20 (KJV)

But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,

If I submit my will to the Holy Spirit, He will change my heart toward the things of the Lord. He directs me and guides me in the way I should go. He will renew within me a clean heart and a right spirit. I am to have the Heart of God and be concerned with the things He is concerned with. I am to love what He loves and hate what He hates. I am to be continually filled with the Spirit so as to be sensitive to His leading. He gives me what I need to be established in the faith and teaches me to walk in love. Faith works by love. If I do not walk in love towards others, my faith cannot work. Jesus was moved by compassion in His inward parts to the point of feeling the infirmities of others so He had to heal them.

Ezekiel 36:26-27 (KJV)

26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

Psalm 51:10 (KJV)

Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

Ephesians 5:18 (KJV)

And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

Isaiah 30:21 (KJV)

And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.

Colossians 2:7 (KJV)

Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

Ephesians 4:15 (KJV)

But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

I must seek first the Kingdom of God. I must hunger and thirst after Him, His righteousness and all that He is. If I thirst and hunger after Him, I will be filled. I love the scripture in Ezekiel where he was given a vision of the measuring of the depth of the river from ankle deep to knee deep to loin deep to so deep it could not be crossed. I believe this is a picture of the depth we can go in the Holy Ghost. We have a choice. We can keep our relationship on a basic level or we can go deeper. He will not force Himself on us. I want to go as deep in Him as possible to the point of being consumed by Him.

Also in Esther, King Ahasuerus was having a celebration and feast for all who would attend and everyone was given a golden vessel different one from another to drink the royal wine. But, those serving the wine were instructed by the king that they were not to compel the people to drink but it would be according to their pleasure. It's the same with the Holy Spirit. He will not force Himself on us but will fill us and keep filling us according to our pleasure or our desire. The deeper the relationship we want with Him the more of Himself He will reveal to us. He is the Spirit of Truth. Jesus, the Word is the Truth. The more I allow Him to live through me the more of Himself He will reveal to me.

Matthew 5:6 (KJV)

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

John 7:37 (KJV)

In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

John 7:38 (KJV)

He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (Emphasis mine).

Ezekiel 47:3-6 (KJV) (Emphasis mine).

3 And when the man that had the line in his hand went forth eastward, he measured a thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the waters were to the ankles.

4 Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through the waters; the waters were to the knees. Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through; the waters were to the loins.

5 Afterward he measured a thousand; and it was a river that I could not pass over: for the waters were risen, waters to swim in, a river that could not be passed over.

6 And he said unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen this? Then he brought me, and caused me to return to the brink of the river.

Esther 1:7-8 (KJV) (Emphasis mine).

7 And they gave them drink in vessels of gold, (the vessels being diverse one from another,) and royal wine in abundance, according to the state of the king.

8 And the drinking was according to the law; none did compel: for so the king had appointed to all the officers of his house, that they should do according to every man's pleasure.

There is so much more that I could say and include as to what I should do to cooperate with the power of the Holy Spirit in the working of miracles. Mostly, I am to have continual relationship with Him. I am to abide in the Word and the Word is to abide in me. Speak faith-filled words, speak the Word only. Basically, and simply put, if I am surrendered to Him, bow my will to His Will and allow Him to live through me and live according to His faith, He will do whatsoever He wills through me. I must trust in the Lord with my whole heart and get out of my mind and into His. Love Him with my whole being. I am to acknowledge Him in all I do and recognize that God is not a man, He is God and I am to have a holy reverence for and of Him.

Proverbs 3:1-8 (KJV)

5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.
